Devon is unique among English counties having two non-contiguous coastlines.
The South Devon coast includes fabulous cliff habitats and fine stretches
of golden sands, where the Atlantic surf rolls in towards the dunes.
The fine beach and unspoilt estuaries of South Hams Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty are not to be missed. Salcombe is a bustling seaside
village with excellent shops, sandy beaches and fantastic sailing. From
here you can take the ferry around the little bays and inlets of the
estuary and up to Kingsbridge. A small market town, with an attractive
quay, Kingsbridge is a wonderful place to sit and watch the terns, ducks
and other sea birds floating on the water. Watch the start of the Tall
Ships race at Torbay
Inland is Exeter with its fine cathedral and of course Dartmoor, an
immense moorland area, where Dartmoor ponies roam freely; an ideal area
for riding and walking.
To the north is the Exmoor National Park, a
incredibly varied landscape, with areas of open moorland, intimate
deep valleys, ancient oak woodlands, spectacular cliffs and secluded
bays,
this is an ideal for holidays at any time of the year.
There are
beautiful coastal villages, the most famous being Porlock, Lymington
and Lynmouth,
whilst inland Lorna Doone valley is not to be missed. A wonderful
area for fishing, walking and riding, the village of Exford is famous
for
its hunting, shooting and fishing. Its shops and hotels are grouped
around the picturesque village green close to the bridge over the
River Exe. There are some lovely walks south down the Exe valley
from Exford. |
